Payment Methods

Last updated:

This page explains how paying for a Mug Loft order works: where you see the available payment options, which currency you pay in, when your payment is taken, how your payment details are protected, what happens if a payment fails and how refunds are returned. We keep it deliberately factual. The exact payment options for your order are always the ones displayed at checkout; we do not list or show logos for any payment method that is not active on the site. If you have a question before paying, email support@mugloft.com.

Paying in one glance

  • Payment options: shown at checkout, on the final step, before you place the order.
  • Currency: all prices and payments are in US dollars (USD).
  • Shipping: free to the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, so the total is the item price plus any tax shown.
  • Card security: card details are entered on the payment provider’s secure systems, never stored by Mug Loft.
  • Refunds: always to the original payment method, within 7 days after approval.

1. Where to find the available payment options

Payment options appear in the payment section at the bottom of the checkout page, after you have entered your shipping address. Each option shows its own name and, where applicable, a short description of how it works. Only methods that are switched on and working for your country are shown. If no option appears for your address, or the checkout tells you that payment is not available, please do not try to pay another way: contact us at support@mugloft.com and we will help you complete the order.

We are setting up our payment options carefully, and this page will be updated to name each provider once it is live and tested. Until then, the checkout page itself is the single source of truth about how you can pay.

2. Currency and price

All prices on mugloft.com are listed in US dollars, and payments are taken in US dollars. If your card or account is in Canadian, Australian or New Zealand dollars, your bank or payment provider converts the amount at its own exchange rate and may add a foreign transaction fee. That fee is set by your bank, not by us; if you are unsure, check with your card issuer before ordering.

The total at checkout is made up of the item prices, minus any discount applied, plus any sales tax that applies to your address. Shipping to our four countries is free, so there is no shipping line to add. Import duties or taxes in Canada, Australia or New Zealand, if any, are charged separately by those countries’ authorities on delivery, as explained on our Shipping & Delivery page.

3. When you are charged

Your payment is taken when you place the order. If the payment is approved, you receive an order confirmation email and the order enters our preparation queue. Because printed mugs are prepared after the order is placed, we do not take deposits or split payments, and we never charge your payment method again without your agreement. The only additional payment you may be asked for is the price difference when you ask us to change an order to a more expensive item, and we always ask before we take it.

4. Payment security

The whole site is served over an encrypted HTTPS connection; look for the padlock in your browser’s address bar. Card and wallet details are entered on the payment provider’s secure systems and processed by that provider. Mug Loft never sees or stores your full card number or security code. We only receive what we need to manage the order: whether the payment succeeded, the amount, and limited reference details that let us issue refunds.

We will never ask you to send card details, bank logins or one-time passcodes by email, chat or phone. If you receive a message claiming to be from Mug Loft that asks for them, do not reply; forward it to support@mugloft.com so we can warn other customers.

5. If a payment is declined or fails

A payment can fail for several ordinary reasons: a typo in the card number or expiry date, a billing address that does not match the one your bank has on file, a card that is not enabled for international or online purchases, a daily spending limit, or a security check by your bank. Here is what to try:

  1. Check the card number, expiry date, security code and billing ZIP or postal code, then try again.
  2. Make sure the billing address matches the address on your card statement exactly.
  3. Ask your bank whether it blocked the payment as a precaution; banks sometimes do this for a first purchase from a new online store.
  4. Try a different payment option if more than one is shown at checkout.
  5. If it still does not work, contact us with the time of your attempt. We cannot see your card details, but we can check whether the payment reached us.

If a failed payment shows as “pending” on your statement, it is usually an authorisation hold that your bank releases automatically within a few days. You are not charged twice for one order.

6. Orders that look unusual

To protect our customers, orders are checked for signs of fraud, such as many attempts with different cards or a billing and shipping address combination that looks suspicious. Occasionally we may email you to confirm an order before printing it. If we cannot confirm it, we cancel the order and refund the payment in full within 7 days.

7. Receipts and invoices

Your order confirmation email serves as your receipt. It lists the items, any personalisation, the price, tax and the total paid. If you need a receipt in a specific format, for example with a company name for an office gift order, email us your order number and the details you need and we will send an updated document.

8. Discount codes

If we run a promotion, any discount code is entered in the coupon field at checkout and the reduced total is shown before you pay. A code cannot be applied after an order has been placed. We do not publish codes that are not valid, and if a promotion ends, its code stops working at checkout.

9. Refunds to your payment method

Refunds always go back to the payment method you used. They reach your account within 7 days after approval, which means after a return is received and inspected, a damage claim is accepted, or a cancellation is confirmed. If the original card has expired or been replaced, your bank normally redirects the refund to the new card. The full rules are on our Refund Policy page, and cancellations within 24 hours are covered on the Cancel or Change an Order page.

10. Taxes by destination

Tax rules differ between our four shipping countries, and they change from time to time, so we explain the principle rather than quote rates that could go out of date.

How tax is handled for each destination
Destination What you may pay When it is shown or collected
United States State and local sales tax where it applies to your address Calculated and shown at checkout before you pay
Canada Import taxes such as GST/HST and any duty, depending on value and province Collected by the carrier or customs on delivery, unless shown at checkout
Australia GST and any import charges that apply to the order Shown at checkout if collected by us; otherwise charged on import
New Zealand GST and any import charges that apply to the order Shown at checkout if collected by us; otherwise charged on import

If tax is shown on your checkout total, it has been collected and you should not be asked to pay it again for the same items. If you are asked to pay unexpected charges on delivery and you believe they were already collected, keep the carrier’s receipt and contact us so we can provide the documents you need to dispute it.

11. Office, team and group orders

Ordering mugs for a whole team, a class gift or a wedding party? The same checkout and payment options apply. For larger orders, we recommend placing one order per delivery address and paying each with the method shown at checkout. If your organisation needs a quote or a formal invoice before paying, email us the list of items, quantities and delivery addresses, and we will reply with a written summary you can pass to your finance team. We do not offer payment on account or deferred invoicing.

12. Staying safe when shopping online

  • Always check that the address bar shows mugloft.com and a padlock before entering payment details.
  • Be wary of emails or messages offering “too good to be true” Mug Loft discounts from unfamiliar addresses; our emails come from our own domain.
  • Never share one-time passcodes sent by your bank with anyone, including someone claiming to be from a shop.
  • Use a strong, unique password if you create an account, and log out on shared computers.

13. Payment and personalised orders

Personalised mugs are paid for in exactly the same way as any other product. The personalisation text is saved with your order at the moment of payment, and that saved text is what we print. If you spot a typo after paying, you do not need to pay again or place a new order: email us within 24 hours with the corrected text and we update the order free of charge. If a change to a different product or size alters the price, we send a request for the difference or refund it, as described above.

14. Questions you may have

Can I pay by phone or by bank transfer?

Payments are only taken through the checkout on mugloft.com. We do not take card details by phone or email, which protects you from fraud. If a bank transfer option is ever available, it will appear at checkout with its own instructions.

Can I pay for someone else’s order?

Yes. Enter the recipient’s address as the shipping address and your own details as the billing address. The payment, receipt and any refund stay with you.

Can I use two payment methods for one order?

No, each order is paid with a single method. If you need to split the cost, you can place two separate orders; shipping is free on each.

Why does my statement show a different name?

Depending on the payment provider, the charge may appear under the provider’s name or a shortened store name. If you do not recognise a charge, email us before contacting your bank and we will check it.
