Mug Size Guide
Last updated:
Choosing a mug size sounds simple until the new mug will not fit under the coffee machine, or turns out to hold half of what you are used to. This guide helps you choose between the sizes and shapes we sell, the 11 oz, 12 oz and 15 oz options across ceramic, color-changing, enamel camp and latte mugs, by comparing them with the mug you already own. The exact height, diameter and capacity of each product are listed on its product page, taken from the specification of that specific mug; always check those numbers before you order. If you are still unsure, email support@mugloft.com with a photo of your favourite mug and we will help you pick.
Sizes in one glance
- 11 oz: the everyday classic. Fits most coffee machines, cup holders and cupboard shelves.
- 12 oz: the size used by many enamel camp mugs and some latte shapes; a little more room, a different silhouette.
- 15 oz: the big mug. Roughly a third more than 11 oz, taller, for long teas, double coffees and soup nights.
- Exact measurements: listed on each product page.
- Wrong size? Exchange it within 60 days of delivery; we pay the return postage and ship the new size free.
1. What “oz” means on a mug
Mug sizes are given in US fluid ounces of capacity. The number describes how much the mug holds when filled right to the brim, which is more than you would ever pour in practice. A mug labelled 11 oz comfortably holds a standard cup of brewed coffee with a splash of milk and enough space to carry it without spilling. When you compare two mugs, compare them in the same way: brim capacity against brim capacity.
Shape matters as much as the number. A wide latte mug and a tall narrow mug can hold a similar amount while looking completely different. That is why each product page shows the mug’s own height and diameter alongside its capacity.
2. Comparing our sizes and shapes
| Size label | Where you will find it | Best for | Things to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11 oz | Classic ceramic mugs, many color-changing mugs | Brewed coffee, everyday tea, desk mugs, gifts for almost anyone | Fits under most single-serve and drip machine spouts |
| 12 oz | Enamel camp mugs, some latte mugs | Camp coffee, milky drinks with foam, porch mornings | Shape is lower and wider; enamel is not microwave safe |
| 15 oz | Big ceramic mugs, some color-changing mugs | Large teas, double coffees, hot chocolate with toppings, soup | Taller: measure the clearance under your machine spout |
Not every design is available in every size. The size options for a design appear as buttons on its product page; if a size is not shown, that design is not offered in it.
3. The easiest method: measure the mug you already love
The quickest way to choose is to compare with a mug you use every day. You need a kitchen measuring jug and a ruler or tape measure.
- Capacity: fill your favourite mug with water right to the brim, then pour it into the measuring jug. Read the amount in fluid ounces (or millilitres; 1 US fl oz is about 29.6 ml).
- Height: stand the mug on a flat surface and measure from the table to the top of the rim.
- Diameter: measure straight across the top of the rim, from outside edge to outside edge, not including the handle.
- Width with handle: measure from the far side of the mug body to the outer edge of the handle, which matters for narrow shelves and mug trees.
Now compare those numbers with the measurements on the product page. If the capacity of your favourite mug is close to 11 oz and you are happy with it, the 11 oz is the safe choice. If you always wish it held more, the 15 oz is the upgrade.
4. Will it fit my coffee machine?
This is the most practical question of all. Measure the clearance under your machine’s spout, from the drip tray to the lowest point of the spout. Compare it with the height listed on the product page and leave a little space for the mug to slide in and out. Many single-serve pod machines have a removable drip tray that gives extra height; check your machine’s manual. If your clearance is tight, the 11 oz is usually the better choice, and a latte shape, being lower, can also work.
5. Cup holders, dishwashers and cupboards
- Car cup holders: most mugs with handles do not sit well in cup holders. Wide latte mugs and 15 oz mugs are the least likely to fit. If you need a mug for the car, measure the holder’s diameter and compare it with the mug’s base, not its rim.
- Dishwasher racks: taller 15 oz mugs may need the top rack set to its highest position. Check the care notes on the product page first: color-changing and enamel mugs are usually hand-wash only.
- Cupboards and mug trees: measure the shelf height and, for mug trees, the size of the handle opening.
6. Millilitres and ounces
If you think in millilitres, as most customers in Canada, Australia and New Zealand do, use this simple conversion for the size labels: one US fluid ounce is about 29.6 ml. The table converts our size labels only; the exact capacity of each product is on its page.
| Size label | Approximate millilitres | A familiar comparison |
|---|---|---|
| 11 oz | about 325 ml | A little more than a standard 250 ml measuring cup plus a splash |
| 12 oz | about 355 ml | Roughly the volume of a standard drinks can |
| 15 oz | about 445 ml | Close to a large takeaway coffee |
7. Weight and handling
Ceramic mugs feel solid in the hand, and a 15 oz ceramic mug filled with tea is noticeably heavier than an 11 oz. If the mug is for someone with weaker grip or wrist pain, a lighter 11 oz ceramic or an enamel camp mug may be more comfortable to lift. The product page lists the mug’s weight when the specification provides it. Handle shape matters too: a C-handle with room for two or three fingers is easier to hold than a small loop, so look at the product photos taken from the side.
8. Sizes for children and older relatives
For a child’s hot chocolate, a smaller, lighter mug is easier to hold and less likely to spill; an 11 oz ceramic is the smallest size we sell. Children should always be supervised with hot drinks, and color-changing mugs are best kept for adults because the reveal only works with genuinely hot liquid. For grandparents who like a big cup of tea, the 15 oz is a good choice, but consider weight if they find heavy mugs awkward.
9. Choosing for the drink
Coffee drinkers
For a single cup of brewed or pod coffee, 11 oz is right. If you add a lot of milk or drink two cups back to back, choose 15 oz so you are not getting up for a refill halfway through the morning.
Tea drinkers
Tea often goes in with the bag still in it and a generous splash of milk. A 15 oz mug gives room for both and keeps the tea hot longer simply because there is more of it.
Latte and cappuccino fans
If you use a milk frother or an espresso machine, the wide latte shape gives foam space to settle and makes latte art easier. Check the capacity on the product page so you can match it to the amount your machine dispenses.
Hot chocolate and soup
Whipped cream, marshmallows and broth all need space. The 15 oz is the comfortable choice; an 11 oz can overflow once the toppings go on.
Outdoor coffee
For camping, hiking and van life, an enamel camp mug is lighter than ceramic and less likely to break. Remember that enamel conducts heat, so the rim and handle can get hot with freshly boiled water, and it should never go in a microwave.
10. Choosing a size for a gift
When you do not know someone’s habits, 11 oz is the safest gift size: it suits nearly every kitchen and coffee machine. Choose 15 oz for someone you know drinks large teas, works long hours at a desk, or always seems to have a mug in hand. For an outdoorsy friend, an enamel camp mug. For the person with a fancy milk frother, a latte mug. And if you are buying for a gift exchange where you do not know the recipient, the 11 oz with a design that suits the occasion is a reliable choice. Because gift recipients can exchange within 60 days of delivery, a wrong guess is easy to fix.
11. Accent colours and personalisation
Some designs offer an accent colour for the handle and inside of the mug: White, Black, Red, Navy, Pink, Light Blue, Green or Yellow, depending on the design. The colour swatches on each product page show which accents are available for that design and size. Accent colours do not change the capacity. Size does change the print area: a design printed on a 15 oz mug is scaled to the taller body, so it looks the same in proportion, while a long personalised message has more room to sit on one line instead of two. If a product page shows the design on both sizes, look at the side-by-side photos to see the difference. Personalised mugs follow the same sizes; on a 15 oz mug, longer names and messages have a little more space.
12. Sizes in sets
Gift sets list the size of each mug in the set on the product page. Most sets use one size throughout so the mugs stack and match; when a set mixes shapes, the description says so.
13. If the size is not right
It happens: the mug is taller than you expected or smaller than the one you replace. Within 60 days of delivery, you can exchange it for another size of the same design, if available, or return it for a refund. We pay the return postage and ship the new size free. Start on our Returns & Exchanges Policy page, and see the Refund Policy for refund timing. If you notice the wrong size within 24 hours of ordering, it is even easier: change it before printing on our Cancel or Change an Order page.
14. Quick questions
Are all 11 oz mugs exactly the same height?
No. Mugs with the same capacity can differ slightly in height and diameter depending on their shape. Always check the measurements on the product page.
Does a color-changing mug hold less?
The color-changing coating is on the outside and does not reduce the capacity. The size label is the same as for a standard mug of that size.
Is 12 oz much bigger than 11 oz?
Only slightly in capacity, but the shape is usually different: enamel camp mugs and latte mugs are lower and wider. Compare the height and diameter rather than the ounces alone.
Can you tell me which size my old mug is?
Yes. Measure its capacity, height and rim diameter as described in section 3 and email the numbers, or a photo next to a ruler, to support@mugloft.com.
